Nigel McBain - Composer and Conductor

 Nigel McBain is a composer and conductor working in Melbourne, Australia. He is the Director of the Yarra Theatre Company.

His music is ecclectic, intuitive and idiosyncratic. It concentrates heavily on lyricism and beauty of orchestration. Nigel uses neo-tonality in his instrumental works and his operatic style may been referred to as "neo-Bel Canto".

Omaha Beach, mp3 below, is from the Suite Normande, written in homage to a visit to Normandy and the site of the D-Day Landings. It is dedicated to all those who fell in the struggle for freedom.

Nigel's music is tonal, indeed his operatic works have been described as a kind of neo-Bel-Canto style, where lyricism and melody have an honoured place.

Born on the day the Sydney Opera House was opened, Nigel has always been involved with music. It was during his education at Sydney Boys' High School that he was taught by Raffaele Marcellino, who inspired him to study Music at a Tertiary level. Moving to Brisbane with his family, he finished his schooling at Brisbane Boys' College, gaining the innaugural prize for Music and being named a Scholar of the College.

While in his final year of high school Nigel became involved with a group of players whom he named the Indooroopilly Chamber Orchestra, finding them a new location to practise. He conducted concerts with them of works such as Mozart's Symphony No. 40 and theDon Giovanni Overture, Haydn's Oxford Symphony, Mendlessohn's Fingal's Cave Overture, the Handel's Water Music,  and some of his own compositions.

Nigel gained a place to study Composition at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music under Gerard Brophy and also Nigel Sabin. He participated in the National Orchestral Composers' School in Hobart in 1994 as an invited observer.

In his final year he transferred to the University of Queensland in order to study with Phillip Bracanin. He also studied conducting techniques there.

Även i hans sista år på gymnasiet Nigel blev involverad med en grupp av spelare som han namngav Indooroopilly Kammarorkestern, hitta dem en ny plats att träna.
