Nigel Lucas McBain is a composer and conductor, currently living in Wisconsin, USA.
His music uses lyrical melody and traditional Western harmony in new and dynamic ways.
His latest project is, "The Cold Equations", an opera in one act.
The opera is based on the 1953 short story, of the same name, by Tom Godwin, originally published in Astounding Magazine. Rights for transforming this classic story of science fiction have been secured from the publisher. The opera is one hour and twenty minutes in duration. It requires seven singers and on set divided into three or four sections. The orchestration is of Mozartian size, for piccolo, flute, oboe, 2 clarinets (2nd doubling bass clarinet), bassoon, contrabassoon, 2 horns, 2 percussion, harp and strings. See the link below for the MIDI file of the music.
